Reinforced cement concrete

1    Reinforced cement concrete :-  Reinforced cement concrete (R.C.C) is the combination of ordinary concrete with the reinforcement to increase its compressive and tensile strength to a great extent.
Properties of R.C.C.:-
a)     It should be capable of resisting expected tensile, compressive, bending and shear forces.
b)    It should not show excessive deflection and spoil serviceability requirement.
c)    There should be proper cover to the reinforcement, so that the corrossion is prevented.
d)     The hair cracks developed should be within the permissible limit.
e)     It is a good fire resistant material.
f)     When it is fresh, it can be moulded to any desired shape and size.
g)    Durability is very good.
h)   R.C.C. structure can be designed to take any load

Uses of R.C.C:-.
It is a widely used building material. Some of its important uses are listed below:
1. R.C.C. is used as a structural element, the common structural elements in a building where
R.C.C. is used are:
(a) Footings (b) Columns (c) Beams and lintels (d) Chejjas, roofs and slabs. (e) Stairs.
2. R.C.C. is used for the construction of storage structures like
(a) Water tanks (b) Dams (c) Bins (d) Silos and bunkers.
3. It is used for the construction of big structures like
(a) Bridges (b) Retaining walls (c) Docks and harbours (d) Under water structures.
4. It is used for pre-casting
(a) Railway sleepers (b) Electric poles
5. R.C.C. is used for constructing tall structures like
(a) Multistorey buildings (b) Chimneys (c) Towers.
6. It is used for paving
(a) Roads (b) Airports.
7. R.C.C. is used in building atomic plants to prevent danger of radiation. For this purpose R.C.C. walls built are 1.5 m to 2.0 m thick.

Advantage of R.C.C :-
a)     Reinforced concrete has a high compressive strength.
b)     It is economical in ultimate cost.
c)    It can be produced easily at the construction site.
d)    Reinforced concrete has monolithic characters which gives much rigidity to the structure.
e)    It is durable, fire resistant and almost impermeable to moisture.
f)     The materials used in reinforced concrete are easily obtainable.
g)    Maintenance cost of reinforced concrete structure is almost ignorable.
h)   Due to the flexibility and fluidity nature, reinforced concrete can be moulded into any desired shape.
i)     It is most useful and economical material in constructions such as footings, piers, damp etc.

1cum 250mm THICK BRICK WORK CALCULATION

1cum 250mm THICK BRICK WORK CALCULATION Brick size with mortar :- 250mm*125mm*75mm Volume of 1 brick with mortar:- 0.250*0.125*0.075 = 0.00234cum. Brick size with out mortar :- 240mm*115mm*65mm Volume of 1brick without mortar :- 0.240*0.115*0.065 = 0.00179. Nos of brick in 1cum with mortar:- 1/0.00234 = 427.4 = 427 Volume of 427nos brick without mortar:- 427*0.00179 = 0.76 cum Required of cement mortar :- 1-0.76 = 0.24cum. Now Dry volume of mortar :- 0.24*1.33 = 0.32 cum We know the mortar ratio :- 1:6 So, Cement :- 0.32*1/7*1440 kg = 65.8 = 66 kg Sand :- 0.32*6/7 cum = 0.27 cum.

Types of bonds generally used in brick masonry.

Brick masonry is built with bricks bonded together with mortar. For temporary sheds mud mortar may be used but for all permanent buildings lime or cement mortars are used. The various types of bonds generally used in brick masonry are 1. Stretcher bond 2. Header bond 3. English bond and 4. Flemish bond. Stretcher Bond:   A stretcher is the longer face of the brick as seen in the elevation. In the brick of size 190 mm × 90 mm × 90 mm, 190 mm × 90 mm face is the stretcher. However care should be taken to break vertical joints. This type of construction is useful for the construction half brick thick partition wall. This bond is sometimes known as running bond. This bond is the simplest bond that is used today, this bond is not suitable as a stand alone structural wall and a structural wall built directly behind it, fixed with wall ties would be needed. Header Bond A header is the shorter face of the brick as seen in the elevation. In a standard...

8 FACTORS AFFECTING SETTING & HARDENING OF CEMENT

8 FACTORS AFFECTING SETTING & HARDENING OF CEMENT:- THE IMPACT OF CEMENT’S COMPOSITION:- The mineral composition of cement and their ratios are the main factors affecting the setting and hardening of cement. As mentioned above, various mineral components will reveal different characteristics when reacting with water. For example, the increase of C3A can speed up the setting and hardening rate of cement, and the heat of hydration is high at the same time.Generally speaking, if mixed materials are added into the cement clinker, the anti-erosion will increase, and the heat of hydration and the early strength will decrease. THE MIXING AMOUNT OF GYPSUM:-Gypsum is called the retarding agent of cement which is mainly used for regulating the setting time of cement and is an indispensable component. Without gypsum, cement clinker can condense immediately by mixing with water and release heat. The major reason is that C3A in the clinker can dissolve in water qu...
